Change ManagemenT

A Sense of Urgency, by John Kotter

If you have not tuned in to change management concepts for communications yet, this is a good place to start. The book focuses on developing the cultural drivers that make transformation possible. If you've read The Heart of Change, this book is basically an expansion of the first step in Kotter's change process. Probably the best, highest-impact contribution a communications professional who is not in a change management role can make is helping make this environment possible in their organization.

Team Management

The Effective Manager, by Mark Horstman

If you have been asked to lead of any size, you can not ask for a much more concise, effective and impactful resource than this book. Those of you who have been on teams I have managed will immediately recognize some of the approaches in these pages. Written by the founder of the Manager Tools podcast, one of the most consistently popular podcasts on business available on iTunes.

EMPLOYEE COMMUNICATIONS

Maximizing Internal Communication: Strategies to Turn Heads, Win Hearts and Get Results, by Paul Barton

When I am asked by those just getting started in IC where to go for good information about this dynamic field, this is the first book that I recommend. Paul's writing style is very accessible and every internal communications practitioner can benefit from his more than two decades of experience at some of the most (in my opinion) interesting companies in the world.

COMMUNICATIONS SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

11 Deadly Presentation Sins: A Path to Redemption for Public Speakers, PowerPoint Users and Anyone who has to Get Up and Talk In Front of an Audience, by Rob Biesenbach

If you are asked to make a presentation in front of an audience, do them a favor and buy this book. Rob applies both his expertise as a successful communications consultant and professional actor to give pragmatic advice that will make you a far more effective speaker. Plus his sense of humor and wit honed by training on Chicago's world renowned Second City stage make this an entertaining as well as educational read.
